The MacAllan - The Whiskey Roundup

Sundays are for Scotch. The MacAllan 12 was my gateway Scotch, so today for Day 6 of 25 Days of Whiskey, I am dedicating the Whiskey Roundup to the storied House of MacAllan.

I had never heard of MacAllan Week until today. That's a pretty cool idea if you ask me. When it comes to offerings and variety, The MacAllan has a lot to offer.

The MacAllan also offers a variety of rare bottles, some as much as 50 years old. I doubt I'll see any of these in my lifetime, but it's nice to see what's out there.

When I was first introduced to The MacAllan, it was it at Richard's Liquors in Kingwood, TX. I was looking for a Christmas gift for my newly minted step dad. I worked at the Starbucks next store to Richard's and had become friendly with a few of the people who worked there. I was told that The MacAllan was the barometer by which all other Scotches are compared. That was enough for me.

This is incredibly cool. Scotch being a traditionally Scottish liquor, enjoyed the world over, I like to see a special variety made just for Londoners.

The Whiskey Journey

Whiskey drinking
Photo by Richard Lawrence on Reshot
I belong to a couple of whiskey groups on Facebook and it is always interesting to see what different people see as good whiskey and what others see as swill. On any given day, any member of these groups can post about a new whiskey they are trying or post about one of their new favorites, only to have somebody comment about their whiskey choice, asking, "How can you drink that?" or saying, "Drain pour!" Everyone has opinions and that's what keeps it interesting.

This is the biggest thing to think about and remember when it comes to whiskey. It's very much like art and literature and film. Everything is subjective. You either like it or you don't and everyone has an opinion.

But there is a journey to truly enjoying good whiskey. Good whiskey again being subjective. Some people may tell you otherwise, but you don't just start out drinking peated Scotch. I didn't, at least. A milder maybe a wheated whiskey is more your style and a better starting point.

The typical whiskey drinker is going to start out looking at something that can be mixed with Coke, probably Jack Daniels or Crown Royal. I'll drink Crown Royal on the rocks, but I've also grown passed whiskey and Coke. If whiskey and Coke is your game, then I would think you're looking at flavored whiskey, either honey, vanilla, or cinnamon. There a lot of options out there.

After you get used to drinking whiskey and Coke, whiskey cut with Coke, you're probably ready whiskey on the rocks or whiskey neat to really start enjoying and appreciating the flavors and elements of the whiskey. People typically tell you to start with a lower proof whiskey, maybe around 80 proof. I think that is bad advice. Instead, I look towards what I call the gateway whiskeys or bourbons. These are going to be whiskeys like Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond, Bulleit Frontier Whiskey, Wild Turkey 101, and Buffalo Trace. These are all very approachable and drinker friendly whiskeys, lending themselves to tastings, on the rocks, neat, and cocktails.

Once you get comfortable with these approachable whiskeys, you'll want to start looking at small batches, different grains and mash bills, Irish whiskeys, Japanese whiskeys, and experimental whiskeys. I'm here to tell you now that this is where the rabbit hole begins. You'll find yourself just going to the liquor store just to see what they have spending hours in the whiskey aisle, getting to know the people that work there. While fun and exciting, it can be a very expensive hobby once you start looking for some harder to find and more sought after bottles.

Now, is when you get in to an advanced phase of whiskey drinking and enter the world of Scotch. I think that to truly appreciate Scotch, you need to learn to appreciate the other whiskeys. In the world of Scotch you get to taste Scotches from five different areas of Scotland, each with their own discernable qualities. Some are aged in Sherry casks. Some are peated, giving an earthy, almost charcoal flavor. Scotches aged in Sherry casks are my favorites of the Scotch world. Scotches are all good and they are all unique, but I think you need to make it through the whiskey journey to fully appreciate it.

There are a lot of whiskeys out there and there are a lot of ways to enjoy them. Some are easier to drink and enjoy than others. Some are more complex than others. The only way to know is to embark on your own whiskey journey. Read books. Keep notes. See what flavor notes you can find. It really can be a lot of fun.

Whiskey Roundup - Peated Whiskey

This week, the Whiskey Roundup is all about peated whiskey. I took to Twitter to find my favorite articles about peated whiskey, and was surprised how few I found that were recent, that is to say in the last few months. Let's dive in and explore!

Peated Whiskey
Peated Whiskey

I can't speak for the hagis, but this does sound delicious. Some nights, a good peated whiskey is all you need to finish it off proper.

Two of my favorite Scotch whiskys are the Laphroaig 10 and the Laphroaig 15. I have heard tales of the quarter cask, but have never seen it in the wild, much less tasted it. This solidifies my need to find a bottle and bring it home as mine.

I've only ever had a sample of the Glen Moray Scotch, but I assure you it was delicious. It is one of the bottles where some day I will have the means and I will someday bring it home.

The Glen Dronach is one of  my favorite scotch whiskys. Sherry finished casks are some of the smoothest I have found out there. So, now knowing that is a peated bottle of The Glen Dronach out there, the hunt is on.

A couple of things about this caught my eye. I had no idea that there were peated English whiskeys out there. That alone is enough to make me want to try it. But then also that someone had the chance to pick a barrel and then have the bottle delivered makes it all the more exciting.

Whiskey Roundup - Scotch

Whiskey Roundup - Scotch

This week, The Whiskey Roundup is all about Scotch. I searched Twitter with #scotch. I found a lot of great posts to share! We're going to look at  everything from scotch reviews and new releases to first scotches to sherry cask finished scotches.

Let's dive in to the Roundup!

Dewar's was the first Scotch I ever tried back in college. Back then, it was the White Label. My tastes have come a long way since then.

That's a fine bottle. I bought the same for a friend recently. Can't wait to sit down and share it with him. Maybe with a nice cigar too!
New whiskey and scotch releases are exciting. It's always great to have a source to go to let you know all about the new releases that are coming out.

I'm a big fan of tasting notes and reviews, especially when they are showcasing special cask projects and special releases!

Sherried scotches are my favorite scotch expressions. I'm always looking for a new one to try.

The more I look in to the world of scotch, the more I realize that my scotch knowledge is limited. There are distilleries I've never heard of releasing bottles I've never ever dreamed. I can't wait to continue my journey through the world of scotch!

Bar Essentials

For anyone looking to have a great home bar setup, it is important to gather up the right bar essentials. In this post, I am going to walk you through everything that I keep on hand to have a proper bar setup to make the perfect cocktails on demand.

Robert Mondavi Merlot and Freixnet Cava
Robert Mondavi Merlot and
Freixnet Cava

Bar Essentials

These are the essentials to always keep on hand

Liquor, Wine, and Beer

  • Champagne
    • My wife loves mimosas. It tends to be her drink of choice. For champagne, you can keep cava, champagne, or prosecco on hand. We typically drink cava, which is a Spanish sparkling wine vs the French champagne or Italian prosecco.
  • Wine
    • Red and White - I typically keep mostly merlots and cabernets on hand. I prefer reds over white wines, but I will keep a bottle or two of chardonnay or sauvignon blanc on hand should anybody want it.
  • Bourbon and Whiskey
    • I always have a handful of bottles of bourbon and whiskey on hand. Though the lineup varies, my mainstays are Bulleit, Buffalo Trace, and TX Blended Whiskey.
  • Scotch
    • The first scotch I ever tried and really liked was The MacAllan 12. I always have a bottle on hand. I usually keep a few others including Glenmorangie, Glendronach, Laphroaig, and Oban.
  • Gin
  • Bourbon, Gin, Vodka, Triple Sec, Tequila, and Scotch
Bourbon, Gin, Vodka, Triple Sec, Tequila, and Scotch
    • I don't drink a lot of gin, but I do keep a bottle on hand. Usually something less expensive like Lone Star Gin.
  • Vodka
    • Vodka seems to go quick. Everyone seems to rave about Tito's and Absolut, but for the money, I haven't found anything better than Dripping Springs Vodka.
  • Tequila
    • There are tons of tequila options out there. I typically go for a blanco tequila. A few years ago, we found Dolce Vida Organic Tequila and have been using that ever since.
  • Beer
    • I keep a fridge well stocked with craft beers and some standard mass produced offerings. I always make sure to leave room in the beer fridge for guests to bring over their drinks too.

Liqueurs, Mixers, and Garnishes

  • Triple Sec
    • For making margaritas, an orange liqueur is key. Triple Sec is a good inexpensive option to keep around.
  • Bitters
    • Bitters go in a lot of cocktails, most commonly Old Fashioneds. There are many varieties out there. I keep two on hand, angostura and orange.
  • Cherries
  • Bar Essentials - Angostura bitters, orange bitters, simple syrup, olives, whiskey cherries, grenadine
Angostura Bitters, Orange Bitters, Simple Syrup, Olives,
    Whiskey Cherries, Grenadine
  • Grenadine
    • Grenadine is a great product for adding cherry flavor to a drink. It can also be use as a sweetener and to give a splash of red to a drink.
  • Simple Syrup
    • Simple syrup is a sweetener that works much better than sugar. You can make your own to keep on hand.
  • Bailey's
    • Bailey's goes in many dessert beverages or coffee.
  • Garnishes
    • Also sure to keep some fresh fruit, oranges, lemons, limes, and strawberries on hand. Also jarred martini onions and olives.

Glassware

  • Highball Glass
    • Stemware, highball glass, pint glass, old fashioned glass
Stemware, Highball Glass, Pint Glass, Old Fashioned Glass
    • The classic mixed drink glass. Also for someone just looking for a water or club soda
  • Old Fashioned Glass
    • For drinking whiskey neat, on the rocks, or for making you Old Fashioned
  • Pint glass
    • For your best beer pours or for when you feel like a double
  • Stemware
    • Keep your flutes for special occasion pours of champagne. Otherwise, just stick to a wine glass for everyday use

Bar Tools

Bar essentials - bar spoon, shaker, jigger, muddler
Bar Spoon, Shaker, Jigger, Muddler
  • Cork screw
    • Always keep a good cork screw or wine opener on hand. There are many types to choose. Find the one that works best for you.
  • Bar Spoon
    • A long skinny spoon for stirring drinks. Some have a fork at the end for fishing out garnishes at the bottom of a jar.
  • Jigger/Shot Glass
    • A jigger is a double sided premeasured cup. You can also use a shot glass
  • Shaker
    • Most cocktails need a shaker to be made properly. Make sure to keep a good shaker on hand.
  • Muddler
    • A muddler is a great tool to use to break down fruit and other garnishes to help pull more of the flavor out.

Would you look at this whiskey selection? So many choices, I can't decide. Which one would you choose?

Whiskey Santa was very good for him! I can only hope he's as good for me!

I think we can all agree that Prohibition was a bad idea. The repeal of Prohibition was an equally good idea. What are you drinking tonight to celebrate that freedom?

I had a friend give me a bottle of Tomatin that she didn't like. I've always liked sherried scotches, So i was a big fan. I can only assume this one is even better!

There's no better way to celebrate a birthday! He should be so lucky!

I've long been intrigued by these whiskey tasting events. Never had the chance to go though!

Whiskey Roundup 07/07/19 to 07/13/19

The Whiskey Tapes Whiskey RoundupEvery Saturday I go through Twitter with #whiskey and roundup my favorite whiskey articles! These are may favorites for this week!

I think for any whiskey lover, this is a dream vacation!

I've heard of Uncle Nearest and read up on him a little. Seems he taught a few of the early, now household name distillers how to make whiskey. A fitting tribute that is long overdue.

I live in Texas. It's hot during the summer. We're happy when it's only high of 92 F for the day. A good fruity cocktail is just what we need to stay cool!

Bulleit was my first bourbon to really fall for, to help me decide that I'm a bourbon drinker. Their rye offering was the next. I have to say that the 12 year rye is like falling for it all over again!

Every Saturday I go through Twitter with #whiskey and roundup my favorite whiskey articles! These
The Whiskey Tapes Whiskey Roundupare my favorites for this week!

This is the way to do the park! Helps take the edge off!

Definitely is not a favorite tweet from the week. I have had some offerings from Jim Beam lately that have been greatly enjoyed!

Yes, this is heaven. The decanter is nice too!

I've been there. Looking from something cheap to take home or to a party, and get side tracked by a pretty label! Usually what I find inside is delicious and definitely worth the buy!

I've written about Roe & Co a few times in the last couple weeks. I guess I'm going to have to go to Dublin to check it out for myself!

Whiskey Roundup 02/24/19 to 03/02/19

Whiskey RoundupEvery Saturday I go through Twitter with #whiskey and roundup my favorite whiskey articles! These are may favorites for this week!

I'm always excited to see distilleries come out with new whiskey expressions, like this new bourbon from Coopers' Craft

Whenever I see a new whiskey review, I try to make it a point to either read it right then, or bookmark it for later. I've been really in to the Johnnie Walker Wine Cask Blend lately. If this one from Tipp Distillery is anything like it, I just might have to track down a bottle.
Just like whiskey reviews, interviews with whiskey insiders are very informative. These are always a must read for me.

Well, you already know that I like look at whiskey reviews. This one is for a Scotch Whiskey, a world I haven't explored quite as much as the whiskey and bourbon worlds. Reviews are a great way to learn about new products and expand your knowledge, and then as a result, expand your collection!

Johnnie Walker Wine Cask Blend

Johnnie Walker Wine Cask Blend
Johnnie Walker Wine
Cask Blend
A few years ago, we went with some friends to a Johnnie Walker tasting. It was a great evening, complete with a video discussing the history of the Johnnie Walker brand, a lesson in whiskey tasting with the Black Label, and then an opportunity to have 4 drinks, with 4 different blends, Black Label, Red Label, Double Black, and then finally the Blue Label. Since then, I have always kept at least Black Label in my stock, sometimes a few others. I came across the Wine Cask Blend and was instantly intrigued.

About the Whiskey:

Wine Cask Blend is a blend of grain and malt Scotch whiskies, some of which are finished in red wine casks, or barrels. The Johnnie Walker website does not give a lot of information about the grains or malt used or which distilleries the whiskies came from.

Appearance:

Wine Cask Blend has a rose gold appearance.

Nose:
Johnnie Walker Wine Cask Blend
Johnnie Walker Wine
Cask Blend

The grain alcohol is dominant on the nose, but there are some hints of oak and fruit.

Taste:

There are dominant notes of berries and fruits from the wine casks, but also a spice and some pepper

Finish:

On the finish, Wine Cask blend packs a punch of spice and then mellows out with a lingering fruity finish.
