High Country American Single Malt

HIGH COUNTRY AMERICAN SINGLE MALT

RELEASING THIS DECEMBER - NATIONWIDE

High West's High Country American Single Malt is finally available nationwide. As admirers of the famed single malts of Scotland, we challenged ourselves to create a true American Single Malt, embodying the pioneering spirit of the American West, while paying homage to those that got us here.

High Country American Single Malt is one of High West's only products that is made out of 100% High West own-make distillate. Aged a minimum of two years, and produced high in the Wasatch mountains of Utah. Unfiltered and distilled on the grain for a robust, western character.

The Artwork

This release features the third installment of the Ed Mell Label Artist Series. Ed Mell is a notable western painter and sculpturer who specializes in capturing the beauty, vastness and spirit of the landscape of the American west with a unique contemporary spin. We feel that this custom painting done by Ed, perfectly captures the majesty of the great Mountain West. High West Distillery is home to pioneers of blending artistry and what better way to showcase the art of whiskey distilling than through an artist series that blends the humble beginnings of the old west with the new.

Boondocks American Whiskey

Boondocks American Whiskey
Boondocks American
Whiskey
Along with the port barrel finished version, I got this bottle of Boondocks American Whiskey from my
dad last year for my birthday. To say that a bottle of whiskey was the perfect gift for 2020 is an understatement. That said, I've been nursing these two bottles because they are so good and I don't want to see them gone. I tend to do that with whiskey bottles anyway. I collect about as many as I can sneak in the house and slowly enjoy them until. There are a couple on reserve, but mostly they are for drinking, enjoying, and displaying. Enough about me and my collecting, let's talk about Boondocks American Whiskey.

Compromise is for Politicians

Distillery: Boondocks Distillery

Location: Bardstown, Kentucky, 40004

Mater Distillery: David E Sheurich

Age: 11 Years

Batch: Unnumbered

Type: Straight Whiskey

ABV: 47.5% / 95 Proof

Boondocks American Whiskey is aged in ex-bourbon barrels

Appearance: Light amber, caramel

Nose: Spice, oak, vanilla, caramel

Taste: The fruit, spice, oak, vanilla, and caramel notes carry over from the nose to the palate. Given these, flavor notes, I'd expect a level of sweetness that is not there.

Finish: Boondocks American Whiskey lingers on the glass, with long fingers. There is a spice bomb at the very end, with the classic and familiar and comforting warmth.

Evan Williams Bottled-In-Bond 100 Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Like most, my first whiskey experience was Jack Daniels. It's cheap. It's American. It's classic. And maybe most importantly, it's readily available. Later, I would try Crown Royal, because that's what my dad drank. When I got to college, my roommates and I would buy Evan William's Black Label, because it was the cheapest thing we could get our hands on. Later, at the time having no idea what good whiskey is, I would find out how good it is, and what's more, I would find out about the Bottled-in-Bond white label, just a few dollars more. Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond has become a semi daily drinker for me. That is to say at least, that it always has a place on my shelf.

From the Bottle

Bottled-in-Bond status is earned only by meeting strict government standards, originally passed in 1897 to ensure quality and consistency. In accordance with these standards, this bourbon is 100 Proof, aged at least 4 years, and produced at a single distillery within a single distillation season.

About the Whiskey

  • Distillery: Old Evan Williams Distiller, Louisville Kentucky. It is interesting to note that there are two distilleries, noted on the bottle by KY-1 for Louisville and KY-31 for Bardstown. This bottle is from the Louisville Distillery.
  • Type: Single Distillery
  • Charcoal Filtered
  • Age: At least four years
  • 50% ABV / 100 Proof

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Evan Williams BIB is amber in color. The legs are quick on the glass and don't linger on the glass long at all.

Nose: On the nose, there are notes of oak, vanilla, and sweet caramel.

Taste: The whiskey is subtly sweet, with notes of oak, vanilla, and caramel, similar the notes on the the nose

Finish: The whiskey has a slow finish, though it is not buttery. It has a light and even mouthfeel. The oak hits you in the back of the mouth and gives way to an oak bomb with sweet vanilla notes.

Whiskey Roundup - Father's Day 2020

Today is Father's Day, a day to honor, celebrate, and spoil the dads in our lives. I don't know a lot of dads who don't like whiskey, so Father's Day is the perfect day to kick off the new format for the Whiskey
Whiskey Roundup

Roundup. I'll be searching for a whiskey topic each week, and incorporating that in to the Whiskey Roundup. Some weeks, as I found with Father's Day, the topic will not have as much to cover.

That's almost freaky fast. I do love some Colorado Whiskey, so will have to give these guys a look. I wonder if it makes it's way down to Texas from those beautiful Rockies.
Whiskey is a great gift for dad. Order it here online for a special gift.  Even if it comes in late, I don't thank dad would mind!

Whiskey Roundup 06/07/20 to 06/13/30

Every Saturday I go through Twitter with #whiskey and roundup my favorite whiskey
Whiskey Roundup

articles! This is the Whiskey Roundup!

This piqued my interest, but now that I'm writing this, I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'm excited to get back to normal, but I think we still need to be smart about it. Either way, I wish Motor City Gas the best.
This is awesome! I'm a huge fan of alternative fuels/energy sources to make a better future. Now, let's see how alternative energy does with whiskey!
For any traveling whiskey drinker, this is a super cool idea. I know if I were taking a tour of Ireland, this would be a must to help me map out my travels!
For budget reasons, $50 is right at the top end of what I typically pay for a bottle of whiskey. I know that leaves a lot on the table. I've been seeing Old Scout out there, but haven't made a move on it yet. Good to see it's in my range.

The BLT, A Summery Cocktail

Summer is here and it is getting hot outside. Hot enough to need a good summer cocktail. Last night, I tried out the BLT cocktail and it was definitely refreshing on a hot summer night outside on the patio, with the bourbon, lemon, and tonic water to cool you down. Today, I'm sharing the recipe with you, because I think you'll want to try it out!
BLT Cocktail
BLT Cocktail

The Recipe

The Tools
  • Cocktail Glass
  • Jigger
  • Cutting Board
  • Knife

The Ingredients
  • 2 oz Bourbon
  • Tonic Water
  • Lemon
  • Ice

The Method

Fill a cocktail glass with ice. Then, using the small side of the jigger, add 2 oz of bourbon to your cocktail glass. For this recipe, I am using Bulleit Bourbon. Next, top off the glass with tonic water and give it a stir. Finally add your lemon wedge and give it a final stir.

It's that simple. 3 ingredients for a refreshing summer cocktail. If you want it to be a little bit more like a spiked lemonade, you could a some simple syrup, but it honestly doesn't need it. Some mint would go really well with this too.

Slainte!

Current Whiskey Inventory

I don't know about you, but I like to keep track of my current whiskey inventory. I get some flack for the amount that I have on hand, and I want to make sure I don't double up on anything. It's also a good way to keep track of whether you have tried something or not.

What is in your current whiskey inventory?

Title No 21 American Whiskey

Title No. 21 American Whiskey
Title No. 21 American Whiskey
I received a bottle of Title No 21 American Whiskey a couple of months ago for my birthday and finally decide to crack it open a few nights ago. I had never heard of this one before and didn't quite know what to think. Obviously I'm a big fan of The 21st Amendment, so I was intrigued I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor profile. What makes it even cooler is that it is made in Texas!

Title No 21 American Whiskey

  • Blend of whiskey and bourbons of various ages up to 10 years in charred oak barrells
  • 40% ABV
  • High corn mash
  • Bottled in Dallas, TX

From the Bottle
The Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution had ushered in a period known as Prohibition. As more and more Americans opposed the Eighteenth Amendment, a political movement grew for its repeal as well as national outcry for the right to great American spirit - Whiskey. On December 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment to the United States Constitution repealed all prohibition on alcohol, setting the American spirit free again. Title No 21 represents the freedom of that moment and now.

Tasting Notes

Color: Caramel/Amber

Nose: Overall, on the nose there are sweet notes of fruit, vanilla, caramel.

Taste: On the flavor profile there are sweet notes of fruit, vanilla, and caramel, with mild spice up front

Finish: The finish is smooth, long, with spice on the back end with a light touch oakiness, and sweet caramel on the tail.

Elijah Craig Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Elijah Craig Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Elijah Craig Small Batch Kentucky
Bourbon Whiskey
I gave this one a taste the other day. I am going to have to try it again, maybe from a fresh bottle. I am not sure if it was due to being from a gift set, or that it was a sample bottle that I had opened a while back and had been left open, or that I had burned my mouth on some hot soup! Either way, I don't think I got the full flavor profile of this whiskey. That just means I have to go check out the new Total Wine that is opening near my office.

The sample bottle came from a Heaven Hill gift pack.

Overall, this was a good whiskey, despite the flavors not being fully appreciated.

Color: Copper

Nose: One the nose, there were sweet notes of fruit and vanilla.

Taste: There were sweet notes of vanilla, but not the usual spice that I typically pick up and appreciate in whiskey.

Finish: The finish was long and warming. It starts in the front and pushes it's way back and lingers to give a warm satisfying feeling.

Whiskey Roundup 11/03/19 to 11/09/19

Whiskey RoundupEvery Saturday I go through Twitter with #whiskey and roundup my favorite whiskey articles! These are may favorites for this week!

I love this. A daughter, promoting her dad's whiskey and telling you where to get it!

It's not my go to, but sometimes when I slow down long enough, I do enjoy to sit down for a nice peated whiskey.

I like this lineup. I'm going to have to go out and find it!

There's something comforting about consistency.

I like a hotel that promotes their whiskey menu!

I had the same thought. Still need to give it a try!

Jim Beam Repeal Batch

Jim Beam Repeal Batch
Jim Beam Repeal Batch
To celebrate 85 years since the repeal of prohibition, Jim Beam recently release the Jim Beam Prohibition batch! This Bourbon Whiskey is non chill filtered in the style of whiskey produced just after the end of Prohibition. I was able to get my hands on a bottle, and just might have to go get some more!

From the label:
At 86 Proof and Non-Chill Filtered Jim Beam Repeal Batch is inspired by the way we made it after Prohibition. That means, all nuances and flavor gained through interaction of the whiskey and the barrel remain for you to enjoy.
Tasting Notes:

Nose: Right up front, I got notes of sweet vanilla, followed by ethanol at the tail.

Taste: On the tongue, there is more vanilla,  with notes of spice/pepper

Finish: Smooth up front. Vanilla up front. Surprisingly, the ethanol notes on the nose do not carry to the finish. The finish gets a little harsh on the finish. Even mouth feel.

Overall, this is a solid bourbon and a nice departure from the standard Jim Beam. If this batch were to become part of the standard Jim Beam lineup, I could see making it a part of my standard collection!
