Whiskey Roundup 06/09/19 to 06/15/19

The Whiskey Tapes Weekly RoundupEvery Saturday I go through Twitter with #whiskey and roundup my favorite whiskey articles! These
are my favorites for this week!

Aside from Monkey Should being a damn fine whiskey, I just though this looked like an awesome piece of equipment!
I've been really enjoying whiskey cocktails lately. My favorites typically have lemon in them. This one is made with Johnnie Walker Black Label. I can't wait to try it out!

I always like to see new distilleries open their doors! It just means more whiskey for me to try!

Whiskey Roundup 02/24/19 to 03/02/19

Whiskey RoundupEvery Saturday I go through Twitter with #whiskey and roundup my favorite whiskey articles! These are may favorites for this week!

I'm always excited to see distilleries come out with new whiskey expressions, like this new bourbon from Coopers' Craft

Whenever I see a new whiskey review, I try to make it a point to either read it right then, or bookmark it for later. I've been really in to the Johnnie Walker Wine Cask Blend lately. If this one from Tipp Distillery is anything like it, I just might have to track down a bottle.
Just like whiskey reviews, interviews with whiskey insiders are very informative. These are always a must read for me.

Well, you already know that I like look at whiskey reviews. This one is for a Scotch Whiskey, a world I haven't explored quite as much as the whiskey and bourbon worlds. Reviews are a great way to learn about new products and expand your knowledge, and then as a result, expand your collection!

Johnnie Walker Fancy Free

Johnnie Walker Fancy Free
Johnnie Walker Fancy Free
Remember the other day, I told you about the Johnnie Walker tasting event I went to several years ago? We had four chances to try four labels one time each. With the Red Label, they were making two different cocktails. One, was an Old Fashioned with some cherry liqueur added. But, that's a different post. The other Red Label cocktail that night was very similar to a Fancy Free, a cocktail made with whiskey, cherry liqueur, and bitters. I'm making mine with the Black Label.

The Recipe:

The Tools:
  • Old Fashioned Glass
  • Ice Sphere
  • Bar Spoon
  • Jigger

The Ingredients:

  • 1/2 Ounce Cherry Liqueur
  • 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 2 Dashes Orange Bitters
The Method:

In an Old Fashioned Glass, add two dashes of Angostura Bitters and two dashes of Orange Bitters. Add the ice sphere. Pour two ounces of Johnnie Walker Black Label and one ounce of cherry liqueur. Stir to combine.

Slainte!

Johnnie Walker Wine Cask Blend

Johnnie Walker Wine Cask Blend

Cask Blend
A few years ago, we went with some friends to a Johnnie Walker tasting. It was a great evening, complete with a video discussing the history of the Johnnie Walker brand, a lesson in whiskey tasting with the Black Label, and then an opportunity to have 4 drinks, with 4 different blends, Black Label, Red Label, Double Black, and then finally the Blue Label. Since then, I have always kept at least Black Label in my stock, sometimes a few others. I came across the Wine Cask Blend and was instantly intrigued.

About the Whiskey:

Wine Cask Blend is a blend of grain and malt Scotch whiskies, some of which are finished in red wine casks, or barrels. The Johnnie Walker website does not give a lot of information about the grains or malt used or which distilleries the whiskies came from.

Appearance:

Wine Cask Blend has a rose gold appearance.

Nose:

The grain alcohol is dominant on the nose, but there are some hints of oak and fruit.

Taste:

There are dominant notes of berries and fruits from the wine casks, but also a spice and some pepper

Finish:

On the finish, Wine Cask blend packs a punch of spice and then mellows out with a lingering fruity finish.
