The BLT Cocktail, Texas Edition

After making the BLT Cocktail for the first time the other day, I was hooked. But I go to thinking, how can I make this drink something that is uniquely Texan? One thing was obvious. It had to be a Texas Bourbon. But what else? Texans love their Topo Chico mineral water, so that would replace the

tonic. Let's try it out.

The Recipe

The Tools
  • Cocktail Glass
  • Jigger
  • Cutting Board
  • Knife
  • Mason Jar
  • Bar Spoon

The Ingredients
  • 2 oz Texas Bourbon
  • Topo Chico
  • Lemon
  • Ice

The Method

For this recipe, we'll use a mason jar. That's not uniquely Texan, but it feels right for this drink. First, fill the mason jar with ice. Next, add 2 oz of your favorite Texas Bourbon. I'm using Garrison Brothers in this one. Top the bourbon off with Topo Chico and add your lemon wedge. Stir to combine using the bar spoon.

TX Blended Whiskey

TX Blended Whiskey from Firestone and Robertson Distilling Co
TX Blended Whiskey
I'm not quite sure how I first found out about TX Blended Whiskey from Fort Worth, TX based Firestone & Robertson Distilling Co. Like most Texans, I'm drawn to things that say "Texas" in big block letters. It probably jumped of the shelf at me. Anyway, it's been a match made in heaven since I first tried this whiskey. Today, I'm offering my tasting notes and thoughts on it.

About the Whiskey

  • Distillery: Firestone & Robertson Distilling Co
  • Location: Fort Worth, TX
  • ABV: 41 % ABV / 82 Proof

From the Bottle

At F&R we value two things: true craftsmanship and excellent whiskey. That's why we blend & bottle TX by hand to bring it's sweet aroma, robust flavor, and smooth finish. The result is bold like the Texas you know and distinctly satisfying. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Please come see us!

There are two things that stand out to make this whiskey unique, the caps and the yeast used to distill it. The cap is more than a humble piece of wood fitted on top of a cork. It has a leather insert in the top, made of used Texas cowboy boots. There's no better way to up-cycle used boots. The other is the yeast used to distill it. F&R uses a proprietary yeast extracted from the native Texas pecan tree. The pecan notes are evident in the whiskey..

Tasting Notes

  • Color: TX Blended whiskey is copper in color.
  • Nose: TX Blended Whiskey has notes of caramel, vanilla, nutty pecan on the nose.
  • Taste: TX Blended Whiskey has notes of buttery vanilla, caramel, more nutty pecan, slight oak
  • Finish: TX Blended Whiskey has a buttery mouthfeel. The finish is quick. There are some caramel and pecan notes that stay on the front. The oaky notes linger on the finish.

Whiskey Roundup 06/02/19 to 06/08/19

Every Saturday I go through Twitter with #whiskey and roundup my favorite whiskey articles! These
are my favorites for this week!

This whiskey lineup looks amazing! Wish I could travel to participate!

Father's Day is coming up. This combines two of this father's favorite flavors, TX Whiskey and bundt cake!
I am enjoying every drop of my bottle of Eagle Rare. I have not had the Micther's Rye, but rye is my favorite whiskey and i'm always looking for new offerings.

Jack Daniels gets a bad rap for being just an an ordinary run of the mill whiskey. Honey aside, Jack Daniels has some special offerings, especially their single barrel varieties.

Swedish Single Malt, I'm intrigued too!

Whiskey Roundup 04/20/19 to 04/27/19

Whiskey RoundupEvery Saturday I go through Twitter with #whiskey and roundup my favorite whiskey articles! These
are may favorites for this week!

I keep seeing this whiskey pop up on social media. I haven't seen it anywhere around here, but I am intrigued. If I come across it, I just might have to try it.
My favorite whiskey. Cheers!

I've always loved the Tulamore Dew label. I've long had my eyes an one of their old crocks on eBay!

I have to agree! Friday nights are best celebrated with whiskey!

I always enjoying seeing recipes deconstructed, whether it be drinks or food. Kind of like seeing what an artist is working with before he creates his masterpiece.

Come to think of it, I'm starting to feel a tickle in my throat!

The presentation of this whiskey cocktail was enough for me to stop and scroll back up. Then the sentiment in the tweet is some serious truth!
